چکیده

North-South Trade-Related Technology Diffusion: Virtuous Growth Cycles in Latin America This paper examines the impact on TFP in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and in other developing countries (DEV) of trade-related foreign R&D (NRD), education and governance. The measures of NRD are constructed based on industry-specific R&D in the North, North-South trade patterns, and input-output relations in the South. The main findings are: i) education and governance have a much larger direct effect on TFP in LAC than in DEV, while the opposite holds for the North’s R&D; and ii) education and governance have an additional impact on TFP in R&D-intensive industries through their interaction with NRD in LAC but not in DEV. These interaction effects imply that increasing the level of any of the three policy variables – education, governance or openness – result in virtuous growth cycles. These are smallest under an increase in trade, education or governance, are stronger under an increase in two of these three policy variables, and are strongest under an increase in all three variables. Income Convergence toward USA: New Evidences for Latin and South American Countries

Abstract In this paper we test two versions of convergence hypothesis namely deterministic or conditional convergence and stochastic or catching up hypothesis using Carrion-i-Silvestre et al. (2005) stationary test. The results show Latin and South American countries (LSA) catching up process toward the USA failed in 1980s and somewhat in 1990s. But in 2000s most of them could lie in converge...

Regional Integration and Wage Inequality

It is the focus of everyone from politicians to union leaders and anti-globaliz...

Offshoring and North-South Trade with Non-homothetic Preferences∗

This paper examines the effect of offshoring in a model of North-South trade when households have non-homothetic preferences of the Matsuyama (2000) type. We presents a platform from which to examine issues of trade and development in the presence of offshoring. The assumption of homotheticity is prevalent throughout the offshoring literature. We find that in equilibrium the South will consume ...

Why some countries are slow in acquiring new technologies? A model of trade-led diffusion and absorption ¬リニ

Drawing on the stylized facts and evidences, in a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model, this paper examines the impact on TFP of North–South, North–North trade-related triangular R&D spillovers. By constructing different technology appropriation parameters based on embodied and disembodied R&D, absorption and learning effects, it shows: (i) North–South R&D flows have a positive impact on ...
